Professional Development

Marcia Tate, according to my notes, once said that professional development meetings are like flocks of seagulls. Presenters fly in, drop a load, and leave.




Ms. Tate is the famous teacher and development specialist who contrary to her metaphor, provided one of the most inspiring workshops in my recent teacher training.

Developing Minds

I am scheduled to deliver PD's in the coming weeks and I want to make a positive impact with the tools I am learning. My real challenge is to make the tools work for me and figure out how to teach others to take and adapt what works for them

I wonder how the teachers will respond. I have a feeling that we will be preaching to the choir for some, and for others it will simply go over their heads. I've realized that it's not a matter of how old you are, it's a matter of whether or not you are willing to keep up with your professional field. Those who feel left out should have only themselves to blame for not keeping up with technology.

I like the visual. It seems that PD for teachers works in this way. Sometimes it's the presenter and sometimes it's the audience. I've been on both sides! In regards to use of Web 2.0 tools, you are always going to find resistance from teachers that are comfortable in the way they teach. Believe it or not, I have seen teachers pull out lesson plans they used 20 years ago. I think the change comes when we realize that our students need these tools to be effective participants in the 21st century.

I like your site, and the comments you have made regarding PD, and teacher training.

I agree teachers need to have the disposition to keep up and current to be better prepared to teach the students in today's classrooms.

I like the format and style of your blog. I agree that there is a certain requirement and disposition to keep up with the educational field, and the technology innovations.

I think to be responsible we have to bring into the classroom the tools that our students are familiar with and which can enhance their learning. I also believe quality PD is necessary for tha to happen.
